BRONX, N.Y. - The Seton Hall softball team was shutout twice (8-0 in five innings and 3-0) at Fordham on Wednesday afternoon. The Pirates fall to 3-11 on the season.
Freshman Hannah Hill (Fryeburg, Maine) retired the first two batters in the first inning, but ran into some trouble after a base hit by Jamie LeBovick. The next batter, Erin Fisher, took an outside pitch to the opposite field for a two-run homer over the fence in right-center, giving the Rams an early, 2-0, advantage.
Fordham put runners on first and second base with one out in the third, and LeBovick delivered a single to left to make it, 3-0. With the bases loaded, Nicole Callahan hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Lindsey Kay Bright. Beckah Wiggins hit a sharp grounder to short that Brittany Hammer (Manheim, Pa.) fielded after a diving effort, but Hammer misfired to first allowing two more to cross the plate.
Jocelyn Dearborn extended the cushion to 7-0 after a triple to the gap in right-centerfield in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Jen Mineau was working on a no-hitter into the fifth inning until Jamie Gates (Emmaus, Pa.) ripped a double down the leftfield line, but could not bring her in to break up the shutout.
An RBI single by Meghan Shager in the bottom of the inning enforced the eight-run rule to end the game.
Hill took the loss (0-2), surrendering six earned runs in 4.1 innings.
Fisher drew a walk in the second inning of game two, stole second, and scored after a single by Callahan. Jessica Richards tacked on two more with a double, just out of reach of Gates in leftfield to push the advantage to 3-0.
Seton Hall's best chance to score came in the top of the sixth inning after a single by Kristen Kaelin (Parlin, N.J.). Freshman Brooke Tull (Greenwood, Del.) followed with a long fly ball to left-center, but the Ram centerfielder made the catch over the short wall to end the threat.
Junior Katie Stilwell (Portage, Wis.) (1-5) started in the circle and took the decision. Kaelin went 2-for-3 from the dish.
The Pirates are back in action next Tuesday, March 23, for a double-header, marking their home-opener against Central Connecticut State.
