SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall softball team dropped a 13-3 decision to Notre Dame in the final game of three-game set on Sunday. The Pirates fell to 5-14 overall and 0-3 in BIG EAST play.
The Irish (24-5, 3-0) scored two runs in the first after a sac fly by Heather Johnson and a Dani Miller RBI single.
Sophomore Nicole Loewenstein (Joppa, Md.) gave SHU some life in the bottom half of the inning, sending a two-run homer over the wall in centerfield to tie the score, 2-2. The blast was the first hit the Pirates notched against Irish pitcher Jody Valdivia and the first runs scored in the three games they have faced her.
Notre Dame went back on top in the fourth after an RBI double by Alexa Maldonado and a single off the bat of Sadie Pitzenberger.
In the fifth, the Irish tacked on five runs to extend the cushion to 9-2.
Seton Hall strung together a pair of infield singles in the sixth inning, and cut the deficit to six after a double down the leftfield line by Brooke Tull (Greenwood, Del.) brought in pinch-runner Stephanie Bontales (Holmdel, N.J.).
However, in the top of the seventh, Notre Dame put a five-spot on the board to put the contest away.
The Pirates wrap up their homestand with a twinbill against Sacred Heart on Wednesday, March 31. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
