BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Seton Hall softball team lost two games to LIU by 8-1 and 11-1 counts on Thursday. The Pirates fall to 12-23 on the year.
The Blackbirds (22-14) went to work quickly in game one, scoring five runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning.
Freshman Cashel Gaffey (East Lyme, Conn.) put the Hall on the board in the top of the second, driving an RBI double to the gap in left-centerfield to bring in Nicole Loewenstein (Joppa, Md.), who started the frame with a leadoff walk.
Mariesha Marker blasted a solo home run in the second inning to reestablish the five-run cushion for LIU.
Emily Kakuska extended the margin to 8-1 with a two-run blast off the foul pole in leftfield in the bottom of the fourth.
Junior Katie Stilwell (Portage, Wis.) took the loss (3-8) after throwing six innings, allowing eight runs, but struck out six.
There was little doubt in the second game as the Blackbirds poured in 11 runs, capitalizing on five SHU errors in the first inning alone.
The Pirates were hitless until the fourth inning when Loewenstein roped a single to left field with two outs. An RBI ground rule double by Brittany Schillizzi (Paramus, N.J.) brought in Nalin Bennett (East Syracuse, N.Y.), who drew a base on balls earlier in the frame.
Freshman Hannah Hill (Fryeburg, Maine) took the decision (0-3), but did not pitch as poorly as the score dictated, only allowing two earned runs in four innings of work.
The Pirates host Georgetown on Saturday, April 17, to begin a three game series. The teams will face off twice on Saturday, beginning at noon and wrap up the set on Sunday.
