SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall softball team lost to Monmouth, 4-0 and 11-1, in a pair of games on Wednesday. The Pirates (7-19) have dropped five straight and have scored just one run in their last 17 innings.
Kayla Weiser got things started for the Hawks (12-9) in the top of the second of game one, doubling to the gap in right-center. Dara Palms tried to sacrifice Weiser to third, but Brittany Schillizzi (Paramus, N.J.) could not handle an off-target throw from pitcher Ashley Forsyth (Freehold, N.J.), allowing Weiser to score on the play.
Jessica Nicola singled down the leftfield line in the third to extend the cushion to 2-0. In the fifth, Nicola picked up another hit with a runner on first base, and rightfielder Stephanie Bontales (Holmdel, N.J.) charged in and overran the ball, bringing in Christine Scherr all the way from first base.
Scherr added the fourth and final insurance run after the fifth Pirate fielding error was committed on grounder to shortstop.
Forsyth took the loss (4-7), but probably deserved better after tossing 6.2 innings, allowing just one earned run and fanning six.
In game two, Monmouth scored three runs in the first and second, then tacked on four more in the third and never looked back.
Seton Hall finally got on the board after Michelle Reed (Wrightstown, N.J.) delivered a two-out triple in the fifth inning, and Kristen Kaelin (Parlin, N.J.) drove in the only run with a single up the middle.
Junior Katie Stilwell (Portage, Wis.) took the decision and falls to 2-7. Reed went 3-for-3 on the day.
The Pirates will travel to St. Peter's for a doubleheader on Thursday, April 8, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
