SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall softball team dropped its final BIG EAST game of the season, 2-1, to Providence on Sunday. The Pirates (19-29, 8-14) honored senior pitchers Ashley Forsyth (Freehold, N.J.) and Danielle Zanzalari (Carteret, N.J.) after the game.
Forsyth was cruising until the fourth inning when she gave up a leadoff single to Justine Stratton. Forsyth recorded the next two outs, but Teresa Bertels hit a homer to leftfield, putting the Friars (22-24, 10-9) on top, 2-1.
The Pirates got on the board for the first time in the series in the fifth after Michelle Reed (Wrightstown, N.J.) walked, and an error allowed Reed to advance to second and putting Jamie Gates (Emmaus, Pa.) on first. Both runners moved into scoring position on a sac bunt, and Reed scored on wild pitch to make it a one-run ballgame
Gates almost tied the game with one swing of the bat with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but her long fly ball caromed off the wall for a single. PC pitcher Corinne Clauss got Nalin Bennett (East Syracuse, N.Y.) to ground out to end the game.
Gates was 2-for-4 to lead the offense. Forsyth (11-12) pitched seven strong innings, allowing just the two earned runs and striking out four.
SHU closes its season with a doubleheader at Stony Brook on Wednesday, May 5.
