SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall men's soccer team lost to Boston University, 3-1, on Friday night in its 2010 home opener. The Pirates fall to 0-2-1 on the season, while the Terriers improve to 3-0-1.
The Hall got on the board first after senior Brayan Martinez (West Orange, N.J.) bended a free kick straightaway from about 25 yards out by BU keeper Brandon Briggs in the 13th minute for his second strike of the season. The goal also snapped the Terriers 239 minute scoreless streak.
BU scored the equalizer in the 27th minute when Ben Berube found a streaking Stephen Knox down the left side of the field. Knox went by the last Pirate defender and dribbled all the way into the 5-yard box and knotted the score at 1-1.
Aaron O'Neal tallied what proved to be the game-winner in the 59th minute after just staying onside after receiving a long pass from Ryan Shea. O'Neal was left one-on-one with netminder Sean Carr (Glendora, N.J.) and scored his fourth goal in as many games.
Anthony Ciccone put the finishing touches on the win with a sharp angle goal from the left side of the goal box in the 64th minute. Ben Havey recorded the assist on the play.
Besides the score, most of the stats were even between the clubs. Both teams got 15 shots off, with each goalie making five saves. SHU and BU each had nine corner kicks, while the Terriers held a 14-13 edge in fouls.
Senior Dritan Sela (Wayne, N.J.) and freshman John Gurel (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the Hall with three shots apiece.
The Pirates will return to action on Sunday, September 12, to take on Fairleigh Dickinson. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
