VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Seton Hall men's soccer team played a strong second half, but ultimately fell to Villanova, 1-0, to open up BIG EAST play. The Pirates (1-5-1, 0-1-0) return home on Tuesday, September 28 to face St. Peter's.
The Pirates were called for a foul just outside of the box in the 11th minute, and the Wildcats' (5-2-1, 1-0-0) Kyle Soroka drilled the free kick to put Villanova on top, 1-0.
SHU had a pair of great scoring chances in the 25th minute after Max Garcia (Jersey City, N.J.) found an opening down the right side of the goal box, but Garcia's right-footed strike went right into the belly of keeper Chris Bresnahan. A few moments later, Christian Battistesa (South Bound Brook, N.J.) held possession of the ball after being tackled to set up Andrew Welker (Mechanicsburg, Pa.), who was not able to get enough on the shot to get it by Bresnahan.
The Wildcats nearly added a second goal after Kyle McCarthy's header off a corner kick hit the crossbar late in the half.
The Pirates controlled possession for most of the second half, but could not tally the equalizer. Senior Dritan Sela (Wayne, N.J.) had the best opportunity to tie things up early in the second half, but his header was knocked away by Villanova to preserve the clean sheet.
Senior Sean Carr (Glendora, N.J.) made two saves on the day, including a big one in the 80th minute, stopping Dylan Renna from a shot from the left-side of the box from 17-yards out.
