SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Sophomore Max Garcia (Jersey City, N.J.) scored a pair of goals to lift the Seton Hall men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Rutgers in exhibition action on Tuesday night. The Pirates will close the preseason when they welcome Lehigh to Owen T. Carroll Field on Saturday, August 20 at 7:00 p.m.
SHU opened the scoring in the 10th minute after a long throw-in by Adriano Gabriele (North Babylon, N.Y.) from the left side from just inside midfield. Gabriele led Garcia perfectly towards the net, and with two dribbles the sophomore attacker's strike beat the Scarlet Knights keeper to the upper left corner of the net.
In the 21st minute, Garcia received a pass from Michael Dietze (Ramsay, N.J.) from the right side about 40 yards away from the goal. Garcia created space and fired away from 35 yards and found the twine for the second time in the game.
Rutgers best chance to get on the board came in the 59th minute. The Scarlet Knights had two players in the box trying to work a give and go, and just as it looked like the second pass was going towards the RU forward's foot, senior defender Bradley Kerstetter (Halifax, Pa.) came in and knocked the ball out of harm's way.
Sophomore Anthony Reichwaldt (Lincoln, Neb.) got the nod in goal and made two saves in 60 minutes while earning the victory. Freshman Mario DeClerico (Maple Shade, N.J.) came to play the final 30 minutes and recorded a pair of saves as well to earn a share of the clean sheet.
Shots were 10-8 in favor of the Hall. Garcia led the way with five shots, three on target. Rutgers had three corner kicks, compared to none for the Pirates.
