This week we are catching up with former softball player Amy Mellin who played for the Pirates from 1999-02. Amy helped Seton Hall advance to the NCAA Regionals in 2001 for the first time in program history and she ranks seventh in school history with 27 doubles and is tied for ninth with six triples.
1. Where do you live now and what are you up to these days?
I am living in California in the Silicon Valley area. I've been working at Google for over nine years now and love every day of it. I currently work in our Corporate Development Mergers and Acquisitions team. Aside from work, I haven't been able to put away my glove and still play softball with a group of co-workers.
2. What is your favorite memory as a Pirate?
So many wonderful memories, but I'd have to say one of them was when we advanced to the NCAA Regionals my Junior year, which was the first time in Pirate history that the softball team made it that far. I also have many fond memories of our team meeting up in "the caf" after a long practice, having dinner together and sitting around for hours cracking jokes and enjoying time with each other off the field.
I also remember when the men's basketball team made it to NCAAs in 2000 and a bunch of my teammates along with other athletes from the soccer, volleyball and tennis teams had a big welcome back celebration for the men's basketball team when they returned to campus. It was a great example of teammates coming together over excitement for our fellow athletes.
3. Do you still keep in touch with any of your former teammates and if so, who?
Absolutely. Most of my best friends are my former teammates, and we make a point to keep in touch despite the distance of me being on the West Coast. I was a bridesmaid in Kerry Kirk's (centerfielder) wedding, have had several vacations with Christina Shanko (pitcher), have watched Misty Beaver (pitcher) coach with Jay Nelson (former assistant SHU coach) at Rutgers, and shown Kim Jackson (shortstop) around San Francisco. Our team has also had some reunion games since my graduation which was a great way to see all the girls.4. Do you still follow the Pirates and what are your thoughts on the program today?
Very much so. I've gone back since graduation to watch them play and it was a great step when the new field opened up on campus. I would have loved to have been able to play our home games on campus! I pay attention to the recruiting and get excited when they bring on other non-Tri-State players to help round out the team. With Paige Smith starting her first season as head coach, it'll be fun to see what she does with the team.
5. I notice you are a Pirate Blue member, thank you for your support. Why do you support Pirate Blue and why do you think it's important to give back?
I support Pirate Blue because being an SHU athlete has helped form who I am today and I want to give back as much as I can to help out other student-athletes. I am blessed that the SHU family took me in and taught me many skills that I would not have learned at other schools such as striving for excellence on and off the field. I think it's important to remember who helped shape who I am today and it's a small token to say thank you.
