ORLANDO, Fla. - The Seton Hall softball team rallied from behind once again to top Florida Gulf Coast, 4-3, to wrap up the UCF & Courtyard by Marriott Tournament. All three of the Pirates (3-5) victories have been of the comeback variety.
The Eagles (5-9) started the third with two straight singles, and a Jessica Barnes single opened the scoring to give FGCU a 1-0 edge.
SHU answered right back in the top of the fourth, courtesy of a two-run blast by Kristen Kaelin (Parlin, N.J), her first of the year. After a Danielle DeStaso (Congers, N.Y.) single, sophomore Meredith Henze (Elkton, Md.) tripled down the rightfield line. DeStaso scored on the play and Henze came in after the FGCU second baseman misplayed the relay throw to put the Pirates ahead, 4-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Eagles put runners on the corners with one out. Emily Lanier and Chelsea Zgrabik each posted RBI singles to pull FGCU within one.
Sophomore Jen Metzger (Pine Hill, N.J.) came in to pitch the final 1.2 innings, and had to work out of a jam in the seventh. Metzger hit Emily Lanier and then allowed a single to Zgrabik, putting the winning run on base with one down. However, Metzger buckled down and forced a pop up and struck out the next batter to pick up her first career save.
Junior Hannah Hill (Fryeburg, Maine) earned the victory to even to move to 1-0. She tossed 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on nine hits with six strikeouts.
DeStaso notched two of Seton Hall's six hits in the contest. Senior Nicole Loewenstein (Joppa, Md.) had her streak of eight-games reaching base snapped.
The Pirates are back in action next weekend at the UNLV Eller Media Tournament. The five-game slate begins with a contest against Florida Atlantic at 2:15 p.m.
