SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall softball team knocked off Monmouth twice on Saturday to advance to the championship game of its Strike Out Cancer Tournament. The Pirates (13-11) won game one, 4-1, and used a two-hit shutout by Danielle DeStaso (Congers, N.Y.) to complete the sweep, 3-0.
SHU will look to avenge its only loss of the tournament when they face Texas Tech at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday.
In game one, the Pirates did all of their work in the fourth inning. With runners on second and third base, senior Laura Canulli (Naperville, Ill.) drove in the first run with a single to centerfield. A walk to Kristen Kaelin (Parlin, N.J.) loaded the bases for Nicole Loewenstein (Joppa, Md.), who shot a single through the hole between first and second to make it a two-run advantage.
Sophomore Bridget Constantino (Abington, Mass.) doubled Seton Hall's advantage with a two-run single later in the inning, extending the margin to 4-0.
That would be all freshman pitcher Casey Moses (Lower Burrell, Pa.) would need as she allowed just six hits and one run in seven innings to improve to 3-2 on the year.
Constantino went 2-for-3, marking her first career hits and RBI, after seeing limited playing time as a freshman. Senior Brittany Hammer (Manheim, Pa.) and Loewenstein also picked up two hits.
Just like in the opener, the Pirates opened the scoring in the fourth inning. A leadoff double by Kaelin led to a sacrifice bunt and a fly ball hit to right by DeStaso, deep enough to score pinch-runner Whitney Jones (Skowhegan, Maine) from third, gave SHU a 1-0 edge.
Kaelin sealed the victory in the sixth with a towering two-run shot over the rightfield wall for her third homer of the season.
DeStaso was nearly untouchable, striking out nine batters with no walks. Her record moves to 2-4.
Kaelin was the only Pirate with multiple hits.
