SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Connecticut's Kiki Saveriano tossed a three-hit shutout to lift the Huskies to a 6-0 victory over the Seton Hall softball team to open the conference slate on Friday. The Pirates (15-13, 0-1) and UConn will play a double-header on Saturday, March 24, at 11:00 a.m. to conclude the series.
A two-run home run by Marissa Guches in the top of the first inning set the tone for the Huskies (8-11, 1-0), who would add an insurance run in the second after a throwing error allowed Amy DeLuca to score from second base to make it 3-0.
The Hall's best chance to score came in the bottom of the second after the Pirates put runners on the corners with two outs. However, Saveriano buckled down and induced a ground out to third to get out of the jam.
Freshman Danielle DeStaso (Congers, N.Y.) settled in from that point, holding Connecticut scoreless for the next four innings until running into trouble again in the seventh. With one on, Emily O'Donnell homered to straightaway centerfield to put an exclamation point on the win. SHU's third error of the game allowed the sixth and final run to cross the plate later in the frame.
Saveriano improved to 6-5 on the season and struck out seven batters. DeStaso (3-5) allowed four earned runs in six innings with seven strikeouts.
