SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall softball team was edged 1-0 by Rutgers in game one of a twinbill before falling 11-5 in the nightcap. The Pirates drop to 15-17 overall and 0-5 in BIG EAST play.
Alyssa Landrith pitched a no-hitter in the opener, with the only base runners coming on a pair of Scarlet Knight (12-15, 2-3) errors and a walk. The south-paw struck out seven batters in the contest.
A solo home run by Loren Williams in the top of the first was all Rutgers needed with the brilliance of Landrith in the circle.
Freshman Casey Moses (Lower Burrell, Pa.) pitched a strong seven innings, allowing just the one run with a pair of strikeouts, but took the decision.
The Scarlet Knights struck early in game two, scoring two runs on a Chandler Howard single in the top of the first inning. Rutgers also tacked on two more in the second after RBI's by Lindsey Curran and Williams to make it 4-0.
SHU finally got on the board in the bottom of the third, putting runners on first and second after a Danielle DeStaso (Congers, N.Y.) single and Bridget Constantino (Abington, Mass.) was hit by a pitch. Sophomore Meredith Henze (Elkton, Md.) followed with a double off the wall to break up the shutout.
A walk loaded the bases, leading the Scarlet Knights to call Landrith out of the bullpen to get out of the jam. However, Landrith beaned Brittany Hammer (Manheim, Pa.) to bring in another run, and Kristen Kaelin (Parlin, N.J.) found a hole through the left side of the infield to pull the Pirates within 4-3.
In the top of the fourth, RU used a base hit and sacrifice bunt to put a runner in scoring position for Ashley Bragg, who added an insurance run with a single to centerfield. After holding the Scarlet Knights scoreless in the fourth, Howard came up with two on in the fifth and belted an opposite field homerun to bring the lead back up to 11-5.
A sacrifice fly by Alissa Kerr (Fairfield, N.J.) drove in a run in the fifth, and Laura Canulli (Naperville, Ill.) kept Seton Hall in the game with an RBI single to bring the Pirates back within 8-5.
However, a two-out rally by Rutgers put three more runs on the board to end any chance of a comeback.
SHU racked up 11 hits in the contest, including a 3-for-3 performance from DeStaso. The Pirates left 11 runners on base.
Moses started game two and was responsible for the first runs scoring to take the loss, dropping to 4-5 on the year. Landrith picked up the victory in relief to improve to 9-5.
Seton Hall will wrap up its 14-game homestand with a non-conference doubleheader against Siena on Saturday, March 30. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
