PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Seton Hall softball team took the get-away game of its series against Providence, 2-0, behind a four-hit gem from junior pitcher Brooke Tull (Greenwood, Del.). The Pirates improve to 20-22 and 2-9 in BIG EAST play.
Tull earned her third victory of the season and allowed just four hits for her third career complete-game shutout. The righty held the Friars' (14-25, 5-8) top four hitters without a hit in 12 at bats.
Junior Brittany Hammer (Manheim, Pa.) also recorded a milestone in the victory, becoming just the 24th player to record 100 career hits. She went 2-for-3 in the contest.
SHU's first run came in the second inning after a leadoff double by Danielle DeStaso (Congers, N.Y.). A sacrifice bunt pushed her to third, and Meredith Henze (Elkton, Md.) hit a fly ball deep enough to bring in the first run of the game.
The Pirates manufactured another run in the fourth after a single and a sacrifice put pinch-runner Sara Haefeli (Montclair, N.J.) into scoring position. DeStaso brought in the insurance run with her second extra-base hit.
Providence's best opportunity to get on the board came in the fifth inning. Two singles sandwiched with a walk loaded the bases with just one out. The Friars' leadoff batter, Michelle Huber, hit a liner to Hammer at shortstop, who caught the ball on the fly and doubled off the runner on third to get out of the jam.
Seton Hall is scheduled to play a doubleheader against Central Connecticut State on Thursday, April 19. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
