Men's Soccer Releases 2012 Schedule

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall University men's soccer program has unveiled its 2012 fall schedule, the first under new head coach Gerson Echeverry. The Pirates will begin Echeverry's inaugural campaign on Friday, Aug. 24, against St. Peter's College at Owen T. Carroll Field in South Orange, N.J., at 3 p.m.
Seton Hall begins the year with four-straight home games as the Pirates will also host Army, Princeton and Rider at Owen T. Carroll field before hitting the road for a pair of contests at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., where they will play Old Dominion and Virginia Commonwealth University.
The rest of SHU's non-conference slate includes a home game against Monmouth University (Sept. 14) and road tests at Delaware (Sept. 18) and New Jersey Institute of Technology (Oct. 9).
The non-conference schedule will feature a number of difficult tests for the Pirates before they begin conference play with Old Dominion, Monmouth and Delaware qualifying for the NCAA Tournament in 2011.
"Even in addition to going to play Old Dominion, we also have VCU, which is a very strong team, so that's going to be a huge test for us," Echeverry said. "Our out of conference games are not easy and hopefully they can prepare us for the BIG EAST."
The Pirates' BIG EAST opener will come at Syracuse University on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m., before returning home to face Providence College on Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m.
Seton Hall will also face Connecticut and Marquette on the road, while it hosts Pittsburgh and Notre Dame. The regular season slate concludes with a unique home-and-home series with Georgetown. The Pirates will host the Hoyas on Wednesday, Oct. 24, at 3 p.m., before heading down to Washington D.C., on Saturday, Oct. 27.
"We will play Georgetown this year home and away, which will be very difficult, playing the same team back-to-back and it will be interesting how we prepare for both games," Echeverry said. "We have been prone to injuries so we need to make sure that we stay as injury free as possible and we need to make sure that some of these guys that were freshmen and sophomores have matured enough to lead the team as they are the base of the squad."
The 2012 BIG EAST Championship is slated to begin on Wednesday, Oct. 31, with higher seeds hosting first round and quarterfinal action. The semifinals and finals once again will take place at Friday, Nov. 9, and Sunday, Nov. 11, at Red Bull Stadium in Harrison, N.J.
"We want to establish that we are going to play good soccer and that our schedule is going to be as strong as it can, both in conference and out of conference so that we can be prepared for postseason play," Echeverry said.
