SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Seton Hall softball team fell to Notre Dame 5-1 in the second game of a doubleheader to complete a long rainy day in South Bend. The Pirates, who fell to 20-26 overall and 2-13 in BIG EAST play, sat through another 1:24 rain delay and finished eight hours of competition.
A pair of walks in the bottom of the fourth inning set up Jackie Bowe, who singled up the middle to bring in the Emilee Koerner, giving the Irish a 1-0 edge.
SHU answered back in the top of the fifth after Maria DeLuca (Cedar Grove, N.J.) doubled off the wall in left field to start the inning. Junior Brittany Hammer (Manheim, Pa.) later hit a ground ball that went off the glove of the ND second baseman, allowing DeLuca to come around to even the score.
Back-to-back singles and a sacrifice bunt put two runners in scoring position for Amy Buntin. The catcher delivered a line-drive single to knock in the go-ahead runs and Dani Miller followed with a two-run homer to extend the lead to 5-1.
The Pirates put two runners on in the sixth after singles by Kristen Kaelin (Parlin, N.J) and Danielle DeStaso (Congers, N.Y.). Senior Laura Canulli (Naperville, Ill.) nearly changed the complexion of the contest with a long fly ball down the leftfield line. However, the ball curled just foul and SHU could not creep any closer.
Hammer and Kaelin each picked up two hits in game two.
DeStaso (5-11) was strong in the circle minus the four-run fifth. She finished with five strikeouts in six innings of work.
The Pirates return to the friendly confines of Ivy Hill Park on Saturday, April 28, when they host DePaul for a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for noon.
