PRINCETON, N.J. - The Seton Hall softball team split a pair of games at Princeton on Tuesday afternoon. The Pirates (18-18) were clipped in game one, 2-0, before blanking the Tigers (6-19) in game two, 5-0.
Senior Kristen Kaelin (Parlin, N.J.) picked up three RBI in the nightcap and became just the fourth player in program history to reach 100 for her career.
The Tigers did all of their work in the third inning, scoring two runs on RBI hits by Alyssa Schmidt and Alex Peyton.
SHU's had a chance to do damage in the fifth inning, loading the bases on a pair of walks sandwiched with a single by Meredith Henze (Elkton, Md.). However, Liza Kuhn struck out the next two batters and induced a fly out to get out of the jam unscathed.
The Pirates threatened again in the seventh, putting runners on second and third with one out. But once again, Kuhn buckled down, getting a strikeout and a fly ball to end the game.
Sophomore Brooke Tull (Greenwood, Del.) pitched a strong game out of the bullpen, but took the decision (2-5). The right-hander tossed six innings and retired the final nine batters she faced in order after the third.
Kuhn allowed just two hits and fanned eight batters for the complete game victory.
In game two, SHU wasted no time going ahead 1-0 after a double by Kaelin scored Brittany Hammer (Manheim, Pa.) in the top of the first.
Hammer doubled the lead in the third with a monster solo shot over the rightfield wall for her fourth homer of the season.
With two outs in the top of the seventh, the Pirates went to work again. Freshman Sam DeMasi (Lockport, Ill.) bunted a single and stole second base. Hammer followed with a single to score the centerfielder for her second RBI of the day. After a Laura Canulli (Naperville, Ill.) bunt single and delayed steal, Kaelin achieved her milestone with a base knock to extend the lead to 5-0.
Freshman Casey Moses (Lower Burrell, Pa.) scattered six hits in seven innings to move to 6-5 on the year.
Hammer led the offense with a 3-for-4 performance from the plate.
