Sophomore Colltey Sheldon (Peoria, Ariz.) came up with the game-winning two-RBI single in the sixth inning of game-one, capping off a three-run Seton Hall rally as the Pirates held on for a one-run victory.
Sophomore Danielle DeStaso (Congers, N.Y.) picked up her third win of the weekend, allowing two earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts over seven innings; she was also 2-for-3 at the plate.
George Washington scored five runs over the first three innings to jump out to what proved to be an insurmountable lead in game two.
Sophomore Sara Haefeli (Montclair, N.J.) came up with a two-RBI base hit into right to account for Seton Hall's two runs.
-- Game One --
Seton Hall trailed 2-0 heading into the sixth inning when it scored all three of its runs. George Washington took a 1-0 lead on an Autumn Taylor sacrifice fly in the fourth, and stretched the advantage to two on a Samantha Dos Santos homer to left field in the last of the fifth.
The Pirates needed to find some offense with the top of the order due up in the sixth. Freshman Yasmin Harrell (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) drew a leadoff walk and senior Brittany Hammer (Manheim, Pa.) followed that up with a base hit up the middle.
Both runners advanced on a DeStaso groundout and junior Maria DeLuca (Cedar Grove, N.J.) brought Harrell across the plate with a ball hit to short. GW shortstop Victoria Valos misplayed DeLuca's grounder, allowing Hammer to move over to third and DeLuca to advance to second. With two outs Sheldon came up with the crucial base hit to score both runs and put Seton Hall in front for the first time.
George Washington did threaten in its last at bat. DeStaso issued two walks to give the Colonials runners on first and second with one out, but did not give up a hit and struck out Tara Fogarty to end the game.
-- Game Two --
George Washington took command of game two by scoring three runs in the second inning, part of a 5-0 start before Seton Hall got on the scoreboard in the fourth.
The Pirates needed just one hit to score two runs as DeLuca and freshman Alex Rabbetts (Corona, Calif.) drew a pair of one out walks. Sophomore Whitney Jones (Skowhegan, Maine) was called on to pinch run for Rabbetts, and both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Haefeli brought them both home with a two-RBI single to right to make it a three-run game at 5-2.
George Washington moved quickly to extend its lead, scoring three more runs in the last of the fourth, and closing out the win with a pair of scores in the sixth.
Junior Jen Metzger (Pine Hill, N.J.) received the start and picked up the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, in 1.2 innings with two strikeouts.
Seton Hall returns to action next weekend when it heads out to San Diego, Calif., to compete in a three-day tournament at San Diego State University. The Pirates open action on Friday, March 15, against Texas Tech at 2:30 p.m. (ET), and face Miami (Ohio) at 7 p.m. (ET).
