TEMPE, ARIZ. - The Seton Hall University softball team lost its finale at the Arizona State Diamond Devil Invitational to Boston College, 16-1, in five innings on Sunday morning in Tempe, Ariz.
The Golden Eagles (6-4) broke up a one-run game with four scores in the top of the third and went on to add five in each of the next two frames.
Tory Speer hit a two-run homer to centerfield in the top of the first inning to provide Boston College with an early cushion. The Pirates were unable to capitalize on a Yasmin Harrell (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) leadoff double to left in bottom half of the inning, but did cut into the Golden Eagles' lead in the last of the second when junior Sara Haefeli (Montclair, N.J.) smacked a solo home run over the wall in left field.
Boston College rallied for four runs in the top half of the third inning, stringing together three RBI base hits, including a two-run double from Alanda DiMaso with one out and runners at second and third.
Seton Hall (3-8) was unable to get the offense on track through the middle innings, failing to record a hit in over the final three frames as the Golden Eagles added to their lead.
Junior Casey Moses (Lower Burrell, Pa.), senior Jen Metzger (Pine Hill, N.J.) and junior Danielle DeStaso (Congers, N.Y.) combined to throw five innings for the Hall. Moses started in the circle and allowed six earned runs on eight hits with a strikeout in 2.1 innings, falling to 1-3 on the year.
Seton Hall will return west next weekend as it heads out to Las Vegas, Nev., for five games at the UNLV Eller Stadium Classic from Friday-Sunday, Feb. 28-March 2. The Pirates open things up with a pair of games on Friday, battling New Mexico State at 2:15 p.m. (ET) and Binghamton at 6:45 p.m. (ET).
