BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Seton Hall University softball team surrendered eight runs in the fourth inning in an 11-2 loss to Campbell University in its final game at the Campbell Hampton Inn Stampede Tournament on Sunday afternoon.
A tie game after two and a half innings, Campbell took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third as junior Stephanie Jones hit a one-out home run to centerfield. Seton Hall (1-3) had an opportunity to tie things up once again as the game moved into the fourth inning, but the Pirates were unable to capitalize on a leadoff single from junior Danielle DeStaso (Congers, N.Y.).
DeStaso singled up the middle and was replaced on the base paths by junior Kaylyn Sanbower (Etters, Pa.). Sanbower advanced to third with two outs following a Sara Haefeli (Montclair, N.J.) groundout, but freshman pitcher Lauren Fischer (Robbinsville, N.J.) was unable to bring her home.
Campbell iced the game by stringing together five base hits in the bottom half of the frame to bring eight runs home and build a nine-run lead.
Seton Hall's early offensive success came thanks to a pair of solo home runs from senior Meredith Henze (Elkton, Md.) and junior Whitney Jones (Skowhegan, Maine) in the second and third innings.
Henze led off the second with a deep shot over the wall in left center field, her third home run of the weekend. She finished the tournament batting .556 with three homers, six RBI, five runs scored and a 1.667 slugging percentage.
Jones' home run, her first of the season and the second of her career, also came in the first at bat of an inning, with her solo bomb to left center starting off the Pirate third. She finished the game hitting 2-for-2, also recording a single in the top of the fifth.
Seton Hall will be back in North Carolina next weekend as the Pirates play four games at the UNC Charlotte First Pitch Classic from Friday-Sunday, Feb. 14-16, in Charlotte, N.C. The Pirates open things up against the tournament host 49ers on Friday, Feb. 14, at 4 p.m., and will also face Drexel and Cleveland State in the three-day tournament.
