LAS VEGAS, NEV. - The Seton Hall University softball team was unable to come back from an early deficit at the Pirates fell to Weber State University, 7-2, on Saturday afternoon on the second day of the UNLV Eller Media Classic.
The Pirates attempted to rally from five runs down, with single tallies in the fifth and seven innings, but that was all the offense Seton Hall was able generate.
In the top half of the fifth junior Sara Haefeli (Montclair, N.J.) reached with one out on throwing error attributed to Weber State's third baseman Alyson Kulp, and she ultimately came around to score. Sophomore Faith Laudano (Islip, N.Y.) singled to left field and the Pirates loaded the bases with one out as junior Whitney Jones (Skowhegan, Maine) was hit by a pitch.
Haefeli's score came in an unconventional manner, with freshman Yasmin Harrell (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) striking out for what should have been the third out of the inning, but it came on a wild pitch, allowing Haefeli to score from third and Harrell to reach safely at first to make it 5-1.
The Pirates strung together a pair of base hits in the seventh to account for the second run. Jones led off the frame with an infield single to short and scored all the way from first as junior Jackie DiPietro (Horsham, Pa.) smacked a two-out double to left field.
Weber State's offense broke out for two runs in the second as Katelyn Robinson hit a two-run homer to left center field. The Wildcats came up with another big inning in the fourth, bringing three runs across the plate. This time it was Kulp recording a big hit, plating two with a homer to left center.
Junior Casey Moses (Lower Burrell, Pa.) started at pitcher and fell to 1-4 on the year. Freshman Lauren Fischer (Robbinsville, N.J.) threw 2.2 innings of relief, allowing one earned run on six hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Seton Hall will conclude competition out in Las Vegas with a pair of games on Sunday. The Pirates face Binghamton on Sunday morning at 9 a.m., before playing host UNLV at 3:45 p.m. (PT).
