NEW YORK - Leading the Seton Hall University softball team offensively and on the rubber last week at the USF Under Armour Showcase in Clearwater, Fla., junior Danielle DeStaso (Congers, N.Y.) landed on the BIG EAST Softball Weekly Honor Roll Monday it was announced by the league office.
It is the second time this season DeStaso finds herself as the recipient of a BIG EAST weekly honor and the fourth time in her career, making it the first time she has been recognized twice in the same season.
Although she paced the SHU offense with a .385 average in five games at the Spring Break tournament, DeStaso's most impressive feat of the week came at pitcher.
She took a shot at breaking a Seton Hall University record, striking out 15 batters in a three-hit complete-game shutout against Quinnipiac on Saturday afternoon, falling just two strikeouts shy of the SHU single-game mark. DeStaso threw four more innings and added five more strikeouts to her weekly total against Maine in Sunday. For the week she posted a 1.91 earned run average with 20 strikeouts in just 11 innings.
Her offensive success included a solo home run, her second homer of the season, in the tournament opener against Chattanooga on Friday afternoon, and she went 2-for-3 against Utah and recorded an RBI base hit in the win over Quinnipiac. Overall she had at least one hit in four of the Pirates' five games, batting 5-for-13 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Seton Hall continues action in Florida on Tuesday, March 11, when it faces Pennsylvania in Clearwater. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
