CLEARWATER, FLA. - Taking advantage of the warm weather between a pair of weekend tournaments down in Clearwater the Seton Hall University softball team faced the University of Pennsylvania for a single-game on Tuesday afternoon, but the Pirates lost the contest 6-0.
Seton Hall failed to take advantage of a scoring opportunity early in the game, as sophomore Yasmin Harrell (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) led off the first with a single to center field, promptly stealing second base, her team-leading eighth stolen base of the year, but she was unable to advance past third.
Pennsylvania quickly gained the advantage in the bottom of the first, scoring three runs behind the strength of a Leah Allen two-run homer. The Quakers added two more in the third as Korinne Raby came through with a two-RBI single to make it 5-0.
The Pirates tallied three more hits in the game and made the most noise offensively in the top of the seventh. Junior Danielle DeStaso (Congers, N.Y.) led off the inning with a double to left field to move into scoring position with nobody out, however was stranded at second with no more hits on deck in the inning.
Senior Maria DeLuca (Cedar Grove, N.J.) and junior Sara Haefeli (Montclair, N.J.) also came up with base knocks for the Hall in the loss. DeStaso started at pitcher and fell to 2-3.
The Pirates are off until Friday when they return to tournament action with five games in three days at the City of Clearwater Spring Invitational. Seton Hall opens tournament play against Boston University at 9:30 a.m., followed by a match-up with Miami (Ohio) at 11:45.
