LAS VEGAS, NEV. - The Seton Hall University softball team lost a pair of games Sunday on the final day of the UNLV Eller Media Classic as the Pirates fell to Binghamton, 6-3, and tournament host UNVL, 6-2.
Sophomore Jackie DiPietro (Horsham, Pa.) went 2-for-4 with a triple and a pair of RBIs against Binghamton on Sunday morning while senior third baseman Meredith Henze (Elkton, Md.) blasted a solo home run and freshman Yasmin Harrell (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with a stolen base in the tournament finale against UNLV.
Binghamton 6, Seton Hall 3
Trailing 5-0 through two and a half innings the Pirates were forced to rally to get back into the game against Binghamton. That charge came in the last of the fifth when, led by DiPietro's three bagger, Seton Hall managed to bring three runs across the plate.
SHU had two on with one out as sophomore Faith Laudano (Islip, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch and junior Kaylyn Sanbower (Etters, Pa.) drew a walk. The Pirate runners both moved up to scoring position when Harrell laid down a sacrifice bunt to second base, and from there DiPietro brought them both home, sending Seton Hall's first triple of the season into left field.
Henze kept the rally going, smacking an RBI base hit up the middle to score DiPietro from third, and she moved all the way into scoring position when Demi Laney committed a two-base throwing error on a Maria DeLuca (Cedar Grove, N.J.) grounder. But junior Colltey Sheldon (Peoria, Ariz.) flew out to center field to end the inning.
The Bearcats added one more run in the top of the seventh inning to make the final margin 6-3. Junior Casey Moses (Lower Burrell, Pa.) fell to 1-5 with the loss, striking out three batters in three innings of work. Freshman Lauren Fischer (Robbinsville, N.J.) gave up two base hits and one earned run in four innings of relief, fanning two.
Seton Hall racked up seven base hits as a team, with DiPietro and Harrell providing a punch at the top of the order with a pair of hits apiece.
UNLV 6, Seton Hall 2
After falling behind 6-0 after two innings of play Seton Hall attempted to chip away at the Rebels' early advantage but was unable to cut the deficit to fewer than four. Henze's home run, her team-leading sixth of the season, came with one out in the top of the third as she cleared the fence in right field to make it 6-1.
The Pirates threatened again in the fourth when Harrell tried to get things going with two outs. She singled to left field and moved into scoring position by stealing second, her seventh base swipe of the year, but was stranded as DiPietro grounded out to second to end the inning.
In the fifth inning Seton Hall used another big base hit to plate its second run, this time coming off the bat of junior Sara Haefeli (Montclair, N.J.). Fischer drew a one out walk to reach base and came all the way around to score as Haefeli smacked her third double of the season into center field.
A DiPietro base hit with two outs in the same frame allowed Haefeli to move over to third. With runners on the corners Henze stepped to the plate and was unable to inflict any additional damage, flying out to left field.
Similarly to the first game of the day against Binghamton it was Harrell and DiPietro at the top of the order recording multi-hit games for the Hall. Senior Jen Metzger (Pine Hill, N.J.) fell to 1-2 with the loss, allowing five runs in the first and second innings. Fischer came in as a reliever in the bottom of the second and gave up just two hits and a walk in 4.2 innings, allowing a single unearned run.
Seton Hall's next test will come during a 10-day Spring Break trip to Clearwater, Fla., starting next Friday-Sunday, March 7-9, at the USF Under Armour Showcase. The Pirates will play five games in three days, starting with a doubleheader against Chattanooga and Utah on Friday afternoon.
