NEW YORK - Senior third baseman Meredith Henze (Elkton, Md.) was named to the BIG EAST Softball Weekly Honor Roll it was announced Monday afternoon by the league office. Henze led the Pirates to a 3-3 week in a pair of conference series, batting. 476 with two RBI's and two doubles.
It is the third time this season Henze has received a BIG EAST weekly accolade and the second time she landed on the conference honor roll but the first since Feb. 17; she was also named the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Feb. 10.
Henze recorded a base hit in all six games last week for the Pirates to bat 10-for-21 overall. In the three games at Villanova last Monday and Tuesday she had multiple hits in every game of the series, wrapping up the three-game set with a superb .636 average (7-for-11).
After going 2-for-5 in the series opener, Henze went 3-for-4 and drove in a run in the Pirates' 10-2 romp in game two on Monday afternoon. She came back Tuesday to go 2-for-2 at the plate with a double and an RBI.
Seton Hall honored Henze and classmates Jen Metzger (Pine Hill, N.J.) and Maria DeLuca (Cedar Grove, N.J.) in a Senior Day presentation prior to the start of the Butler series on Saturday afternoon. Henze went on to record a base hit in all three games against the Bulldogs to run her current hitting streak to six games, the second longest of the season.
For the year, Henze ranks second on the team with a .317 batting average and has belted a team-leading and career-best eight home runs with five doubles to slug .525. She is tied for 11th in program history with 13-career home runs and needs just one more to move into the top 10.
Seton Hall is currently in a race to grab its second-straight berth to the BIG EAST Championship, sitting fifth in the conference standings with a 9-9 record, a half-game behind Georgetown, St. John's and Butler who are all 9-8 in league play with one regular season series remaining. The top four teams in the standings will compete for the 2014 BIG EAST Tournament on Friday-Saturday, May 9-10, in Rosemont, Ill.
The Pirates will travel to Washington, D.C. this Saturday-Sunday, May 3-4, for three games against Georgetown University, with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday and the regular season finale on Sunday. Seton Hall can clinch a postseason berth with any combination or one, two or three wins this weekend, but is only guaranteed a spot in the BIG EAST Championship with a series win over the Hoyas. First pitch on Saturday and Sunday is scheduled for 12 p.m.
