SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall University softball team's doubleheader with Stony Brook University, scheduled for Wednesday, April 30, at 3 p.m., has been cancelled due to a forecast calling for persistent heavy rainfall throughout the day on Wednesday. The non-conference doubleheader will not be rescheduled.
Seton Hall will conclude regular season competition with a three-game series at BIG EAST foe Georgetown University on Saturday-Sunday, May 3-4, in Washington, D.C. The teams will meet for a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12 p.m., with the series finale scheduled for Sunday at 12 p.m.
The Pirates and Hoyas are two of the five teams vying for the final three spots in the BIG EAST Championship with the series winner guaranteeing themselves a trip to Rosemont, Ill., for the conference tournament.
The top four teams in the eight-team league qualify for the two-day, single-elimination championship, to be held Friday-Saturday, May 9-10, at the Ballpark at Rosemont just outside of Chicago. Friday's semifinal action is scheduled for 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. (ET), with both games scheduled to be broadcast live on Fox Sports 2. Saturday's championship game will be aired live on Fox Sports 1 at 12 p.m. (ET), with the winner earning the league's automatic berth to the 2014 NCAA Championship.
Regular season champion DePaul University is the only team to secure a BIG EAST postseason berth. Georgetown, St. John's and Butler are currently tied for second place with identical 9-8 records in conference play, while the Pirates sit just a half game behind at 9-9. Creighton is still in the running for a tournament slot at 7-10 in BIG EAST play.
Seton Hall, Georgetown, Butler and St. John's each control their own destiny while at three games below .500 Creighton needs some help.
The Bluejays host Providence for three games over the weekend while DePaul takes its perfect BIG EAST record on the road to Butler and St. John's travels to Villanova for its final series of the year.
