SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall tennis team is currently enjoying its most successful season in its seven years under head coach Greg Wyzykowski and on Thursday, Wyzykowski announced the addition of prep standout Marisa Quevedo (Tyler, Texas) who will enroll in the university and begin competing for the Pirates in the fall.
Quevedo, who currently attends the Brook Hill School, is one of the most highly regarded members of the class of 2014 in the talent-rich state of Texas according to Tennisrecruting.net, ranking as high as the top-10 in the state this year. A four-star recruit, she has recorded over 40 wins on the United States Tennis Association (USTA) junior circuit since the beginning of 2013.
"I first got the chance to watch Marisa play at a showcase event in Memphis and was immediately impressed by her all-court skills," said Wyzykowski. "Marisa is a tremendous athlete and possesses a skill set that will enable her to make an impact for our team in both singles and doubles."
A well-rounded talent with a number of singles and doubles titles to her credit, Quevedo has long been a force on the regional and national tennis scenes, shining in the highly-competitive Super Championship division. At the Waco Regional Tennis Center tournament in September, she teamed with her sister Danielle to string together four consecutive victories to take home a doubles title; dropping only nine games in the process.
Throughout her high school career, the Lone Star State product has maintained a standard of excellence. At the Capsher Texas Grand Slam in 2011, she served as one-half of a title-winning doubles pair that yielded only one set en route to the championship. Earlier that spring she had helped reach the doubles final at both the Super Championship event in Austin as well as the USTA Regional Tournament, a level III national event.
As just a freshman, she also took home the hardware in doubles at the Waco tournament. The victory was her second of the year after she began it by capturing another doubles trophy at the San Antonio tournament, sandwiching in a superlative performance at the Texas Open in which she was both a singles and doubles finalist. In 2009, Quevedo powered her way to five-straight singles wins to claim the crown at the Texas Open; her first of two championships in a two-week span. as she followed with five more wins to emerge as the class of her draw at the Bob Faulkner event.
In this, her senior year, Quevedo has continued to perform well. According to the comprehensive rating system employed by UniversalTennis.com, her level of play rivals that of many of the primary #1 singles players around the BIG EAST. Consistent with what has been the standard within the program throughout Wyzykowski's tenure; Quevedo is also an academic standout as well and is a member of the National Honor Society.
With seniors Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) and two-time All-BIG EAST selection Chloe Sher (Tin Shui Wai, Hong Kong) putting the final touches on their decorated careers, Quevedo will join a Pirates' squad looking to build on the progress the program has experienced in recent years.
"Marisa is a very dedicated individual who will provide a valuable presence for our team," added Wyzykowski."Aside from her contributions on the court, I can definitely see her developing into a leader for us and helping the program continue to establish itself as a conference and regional power."
