WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Seton Hall University softball team fell at Georgetown University, 8-0, in its season finale on Sunday afternoon at Guy Mason Field.
The Hoyas plated six runs over the final two innings in the win. Seton Hall concludes its season with a 15-34 overall record and a 9-12 mark in the BIG EAST, falling short of its bid for a second-straight BIG EAST Championship berth.
Georgetown led 2-0 heading to the bottom of the fifth, which is when Hannah Slovacek homered to left field, capping off a three-run inning for the Hoyas that provided them with a 5-0 lead.
Junior Casey Moses (Lower Burrell, Pa.) came in to relieve SHU starter Jen Metzger (Pine Hill, N.J.) and worked out of a jam later in the frame. With runners on first and second with just one out, Moses forced Alexandria Antilla to ground into an inning-ending double play.
With one out in the top of the sixth, sophomore Jackie DiPietro (Horsham, Pa.) lined a base hit to left to extend her career-best hitting streak to six-straight games. She went 1-for-2 on Sunday and was 4-for-8 in the series to finish the season with a team-leading .338 average, nearly an 80-point jump from her .261 average as a freshman.
The Pirates were unable to rally around the opportunity as DiPiero was caught trying to steal second and senior Maria DeLuca (Cedar Grove, N.J.) grounded out to short to end the inning.
The Hoyas took advantage of a pair of Seton Hall errors to add three more runs in the sixth. One run was already across with runners at second and third for Grace Appelbe, who singled to left field to drive in the two game-ending runs.
Metzger started and allowed three earned runs on four hits. She also went 1-for-2 at the plate with an infield single to short in the fifth.
