SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall University softball team lost its series finale with the DePaul Blue Demons, 11-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Field.
The Pirates (11-18, 0-3) were doomed by a fast start by the Blue Demons, who took an early 8-0 lead behind a pair of first-inning home runs. Following a single and a walk, Dylan Christensen homered to left center to make it 3-0. Three batters later, Sabrina Kuchta recorded the second three-run homer of the inning for DePaul, and the Blue Demons made the most of a handful of SHU errors in the field to bring two more across the plate and extend the lead to 8-0.
Seton Hall manufactured a run in the bottom of the third. Catcher Alex Rabbetts (Corona, Calif.) led off with a single to left, and moved into scoring position on a Jackie DiPietro (Horsham, Pa.) groundout. With one away, pitcher Lauren Fischer (Robbinsville, N.J.) sent a single up the middle, but got caught in a run down between first and second. Rabbets would score, although Fischer was tagged for the second out of the inning.
The Pirates threatened again in the fourth. Freshman Alexis Walkden (Cibolo, Texas) sent a hard hit ball up the middle, and SHU had two on with one out as Sara Haefeli (Montclair, N.J.) reached on a Brittany Boesel error at short. However, Mary Connolly retired the next two she faced to escape the jam.
Harrell continued her hot stretch at the plate, picking up two more base hits to finish 2-for-3 on the day and 5-for-8 in the three-game series.
Senior Danielle DeStaso (Congers, N.Y.) started at pitcher, but was relieved by Fischer in the first. DeStaso fell to 5-8 with the loss, while Fischer threw five innings, giving up just three hits with a pair of strikeouts. She was charged with five runs against, but only one was earned.
Seton Hall is back in action for a non-conference tilt at Fordham University on Thursday, March 26, in Bronx, N.Y. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. The Pirates will resume conference play this weekend, when they host Villanova University for a three-game set on Saturday-Sunday.
