NEW YORK - As she solidified her hold on the BIG EAST home run lead, Seton Hall University freshman slugger Alexis Walkden (Cibolo, Texas) landed on the BIG EAST Softball Weekly Honor Roll for a third time this season, Monday it was announced by the league office.
Walkden, who is producing one of the best freshman campaigns in the country, homered five times last week to help Seton Hall post a 3-2 record in BIG EAST games. Walkden has hit 15 home runs this season, which not only leads the BIG EAST but already ties for second in a single season at Seton Hall. She is just three homers shy of matching SHU's single-season record of 18.
Seton Hall split a doubleheader at Providence last Monday, then took 2-of-3 in a series at Creighton over the weekend to maintain its hold on third place in the league standings with a 6-5 mark as the BIG EAST season crossed the midway point.
For the week, Walkden hit .389 with a 1.222 slugging percentage, blasting five homers while driving in eight, scoring eight and stealing three bases. She had at least one base hit in four games with a pair of multi-home run performances, which is now four contests with at least two home runs this season.
In that doubleheader at Providence early in the week, she combined to hit 3-for-7 at the plate with a pair of home runs. In SHU's 7-4 victory in game two, Walkden went 2-for-3 with a pair of solo home runs.
In the series at Creighton, Walkden would homer three more times. After dropping the series opener on Saturday afternoon, the Pirates bounced back to take game two, 9-7. Walkden went 3-for-4 with two home runs, three RBI and three runs scored.
On Sunday afternoon she left the park for a third time, sending in a three-run shot out to left in a 12-1 Seton Hall rout.
The Pirates combined to hit nine home runs as a team in the series at Creighton, setting a new Seton Hall single-season record in the process. Back in 2006 the Pirates hit a then school-record 40 home runs, but this year's squad already has 47 to its credit, the most in the BIG EAST.
Seton Hall opens an eight-game home stand this Tuesday afternoon, when it hosts Rutgers University for a single game at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Field at 4 p.m. The Pirates then return to conference play this weekend, welcoming St. John's University for a three-game series on Saturday-Sunday, April 18-19.
