PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The series finale between the Seton Hall University softball team and Providence College was rained out on Tuesday afternoon after the teams had completed three full innings. As a result the game's results will not count and the contest will not be made up.
Seton Hall led Providence 2-1 in the top of the fourth, needing to complete five innings for the game to be deemed official, but then a steady rain began to fall and the officials made the call to suspend action and eventually cancel the game.
After giving up an unearned tally in the bottom of the first, Seton Hall took advantage of a pair of Friar fielding errors to come back and take the lead.
Senior Danielle DeStaso (Congers, N.Y.) led off the inning with a grounder to third, and reached safely thanks to a Shanelle Harrell error. An Alex Rabbetts (Corona, Calif.) single gave the Pirates two on with no outs and then the Friars' second error of the inning proved costly, as Taylor Huntly misplayed a Valerie Suto (Mercerville, N.J.) grounder, allowing two runs to score.
It was after yet another error provided the Pirates with runners at the corners that officials stopped play due to rainy conditions, and play was not resumed.
DeStaso had given up just one unearned run and one hit through three innings of work. Rabbetts had gone 2-for-2 at the plate with a run scored.
Seton Hall returns to action this weekend when it heads out to Omaha, Neb., for a three-game series with the Creighton Bluejays on Saturday-Sunday, April 11-12. The squads will meet for a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. (ET), and will play the series finale on Sunday at 12 p.m. (ET).
