SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- One day after securing the third seed in the 2015 BIG EAST Softball Championship with a doubleheader sweep of Georgetown, the Seton Hall softball team came up short in the regular season finale -- falling to the Hoyas, 7-1.
The Pirates finish the regular season at 24-27 overall and 10-10 in conference play, posting double-digit BIG EAST victories for the first time since 2009. It had also been six years since The Hall wrapped up with as many as 24 wins.
Seven senior members of the program were honored prior to the game on Sunday and Sam DeMasi(Lockport, Ill.), Danielle DeStaso (Congers, N.Y.), Sara Haefeli (Montclair, N.J.), Whitney Jones (Skowhegan, Maine), Casey Moses (Lower Burell, Pa.), Jordan Moses(Lower Burrell, Pa.)andKaylyn Sanbower(Etters, Pa.) were all inserted into the starting lineup for what was their final home contest.
DeStaso, who moved into third on the school's all-time strikeouts list and second in the program's RBI rankings on Saturday, took the ball but Georgetown jumped ahead early with two runs in the opening frame.
The Hoyas added one more in the top of the third but junior Jackie DiPietro (Horsham, Pa.) led off the bottom half with a walk and stole second to move into scoring position. With two away, DeMasi put a ball in play that was mishandled by GU second baseman Samantha Giovaniello on the throw to first; allowing her to take second while DiPietro came around to score.
An All-BIG EAST First Team selection as a sophomore, DiPietro was also recognized as part of the pregame ceremony as she will dedicate next year to her academic pursuits.
Georgetown generated four more runs however, holding off the Pirates due in large part to a three-run sixth inning that saw nine Hoyas come to the plate.
Georgetown senior Megan Hyson drove in three of the team's seven runs and picked up her 11th win of the season with a complete game.
With the regular season in the books, SHU is now headed for its second conference tournament in three years under head coach Paige Smith. Seton Hall will be making its 11th total appearance on the BIG EAST stage and owns two conference titles which came in consecutive years from 2004-05. The Pirates also earned at at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament in 2001 after registering 29 wins and advancing to the BIG EAST title game.
The Hall will be matched up with reigning champions DePaul in Friday's semifinal action after the Blue Demons clinched the #2 seed. St. John's will enter the single-elimination tournament as the top seed after going 16-2 against BIG EAST opposition to this point in the season while Villanova (24-29, 9-12) earned the final spot by upending the Red Storm, 3-0, on Sunday.
The Pirates and hosts DePaul will kick things off at the 2015 BIG EAST Championship presented by New York Life with first pitch from Rosemont scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET/1:00 p.m. CT on Friday, May 8.
All three throughout the weekend are scheduled to be shown live nationally on FOX Sports 2 with a stream available online and on mobile devices through the FOX Sports Go app.
