KIELCE, Poland - Three-year captain and former Seton Hall men's soccer star Mateusz Brela has signed a professional contract with Korona Kielce of the Ekstraklasa. Korona Kielce competes in the top flight of professional soccer in Brela's native Poland. Brela will play for the squad's reserves team with the chance to earn time with the first team.
Brela ('15) is the latest member of Seton Hall's most recent senior class to make a splash on the professional ranks, as three classmates recently debuted for the New York Red Bulls in a victory over Chelsea FC. The defender played in 69 games during his career in South Orange, starting 58 contests. He scored three of his four career goals as a senior in 2014 and was an integral cog in a defensive unit that recorded seven shutouts in '14.
The Kielce-native played more than 5,500 minutes as a Pirate, rarely leaving the pitch from his center back position. Off the pitch, Brela was awarded with Seton Hall's Sports and Sprituality Award following his senior season and graduated with honors. He joins a Korona Kielce club that is currently sitting in second place in the Ekstraklasa, securing victories in each of its first two fixtures this season.
Seton Hall opens the 2015 season with an exhibition against Fordham on Aug. 20 before the season opener at College of Charleston on Aug. 28. The Pirates host their first regular season match at Owen T. Caroll Field on Sept. 4, welcoming Rider to South Orange.
