Pirates Knock Off Xavier On Senior Night
10/29/2016 10:17:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – On Senior Night Saturday in South Orange, it was a pair of goals from underclassmen that propelled the Seton Hall men's soccer team (4-10-2, 2-5-1 BIG EAST) to a 2-1 victory over Xavier (8-6-3, 4-3-1). Spencer Burkhardt (Palmyra, Pa.) put the Pirates ahead with a 53rd minute strike, before Nathan Tremonti (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) found the game-winner in the 89th minute for his first career goal.
After a scoreless first half, both sides scored within 50 seconds of each other early in the second to convert a 0-0 match to a 1-1 deadlock. The two sides traded quality looks over the next half hour, until the Pirates were finally able to convert in the final moments of regulation.
Turning Point
A hard foul in the Xavier half led to a long free kick for the Pirates with two minutes remaining in regulation, rifled toward the box by Andres Arcila (Cartagena, Colombia). Xavier was able to partially clear the attempt, but Corey Burkhardt (Palmyra, Pa.) kept it alive and popped it up toward the top of the box. That's where Tremonti was able to gather and fire a left-footed shot through traffic and past the XU keeper to give The Hall a 2-1 lead.
