NEW YORK - Seton Hall softball standout Alexis Walkden (Cibolo, Texas) has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday (Feb. 15). The reigning BIG EAST Rookie of the Year earned the first weekly honor of the year from the league after her sterling performance at The Hall's 4-1 weekend at the Mardi Gras Classic. In addition, freshman Madison Strunk (Adkins, Texas) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Walkden's nod comes after she hit .455 in five games for The Hall, adding a home run, four runs scored and four RBIs. Walkden slashed .455/.667/.909 on the weekend as the sophomore drew five walks and stole four bases in a strong all-around tournament. For her efforts, the infielder was named to the Mardi Gras Classic All-Tournament Team.
The weekly honor roll selection for Strunk comes after the freshman hurler went 3-1 in her first four career appearances, making three starts and compiling a 1.83 ERA in 19.2 innings. The rookie struck out 12 batters against four walks and allowed only 12 hits, holding opponents to a .179 batting average against. She fired a complete game shutout in her first career start on Feb. 13 vs. Stephen F. Austin and was later named Co-Most Outstanding Player at the Mardi Gras Classic.
The Pirates return to action on Friday, Feb. 19 when they begin play at the Kickin' Chicken Classic in Conway, S.C. First up for The Hall is Towson at 11:45 a.m. on the 19th.
