NEW YORK - Seton Hall softball star Alexis Walkden (Cibolo, Texas) has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday (April 25). Walkden picks up the weekly honor for the second time this season after batting .750 in four games last week including a three-game sweep of a conference series over Providence.
Walkden finished the 3-1 week for the Pirates with nine hits in 12 at-bats, posting an absurd slash line of .750/.800/1.583. She added a pair of home runs, two doubles, a triple, six runs scored, seven RBIs and a stolen base. The sophomore recorded multiple hits in all four games and scored at least one run in every contest, driving in at least a run in three of four outings.
In an extra-inning loss at Drexel on April 21, Walkden went 2-for-3 with three RBIs including a two-run home run in the seventh inning to force extras. She followed that performance with a dominant outing in a doubleheader against PC on April 23, going 2-for-3 in both games and scoring the winning run in game two. In that second game, Walkden homered, tripled and drove in three. She capped her epic weekend with a 3-for-3 performance as The Hall came away with the sweep on Sunday, April 24.
With her big effort over the weekend Walkden extended her hitting streak to 10 games, a span in which she is batting .594. Her overall season average climbed to .383, seventh in the BIG EAST, and she is third in the league with a .452 average during conference play. Walkden tops the conference with 92 total bases on the season and ranks third in home runs (8) and fifth in RBIs (38), also ranking top-five in runs, slugging percentage and on-base percentage.
The Pirates return to action this week when they visit Stony Brook for their midweek finale. The Hall and Seawolves will square off at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 28.
