Walkden Powers The Hall To Win Over Va. Tech

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Behind a big offensive performance from Alexis Walkden (Cibolo, Texas) and clutch pitching down the stretch, the Seton Hall softball team (6-2) closed its run at the ECU Pirate Inivitational with a 6-5 win over Virginia Tech (8-5) on Sunday morning at the ECU Softball Stadium. The victory for The Hall gave it a 3-2 record at the weekend tournament and marked its second win over an ACC opponent in as many days.
Walkden paced the offense with a 3-for-4 performance, homering and driving in two along with a double and two runs scored. Lauren Fischer (Robbinsville, N.J.) added two hits and scored a run, also notching the save in the circle with 3.0 innings of one-run ball out of the pen.
Turning Points
The Hall jumped out to a first inning lead, with Walkden smashing a two-run home run in the game's second at-bat after a Sara Foster (Long Beach, Calif.) lead-off walk. The Pirates stretched their lead to 5-0 with a three-spot in the top of the third, including a two-run double from freshman Hailey Arteaga (Upland, Calif.).
The Hokies battled back, scratching across runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to slim the lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the fifth. With a runner on and one out, Fischer came up with a huge strike-out, throw-out double play to end the fifth. Virginia Tech added another run in the sixth with a solo home run, but Fischer was able to strand the potential go-ahead runs on base in the bottom of the seventh and preserve the win.
