NEW YORK – After a 3-0 week for the Seton Hall men's soccer team, senior Andres Arcila (Cartagena, Colombia) has been named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week and keeper Elliot Munford (Auckland, New Zealand) has been named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. The conference announced the award on Monday (Sept. 11). Arcila and Munford become the first two Pirates to win individual honors this season.
In wins over Sacred Heart, Princeton and Penn, Arcila scored three goals, dished out three assists and netted a pair of game-winners as Seton Hall notched its first three-game winning streak since 2011. He played a total of 246 minutes over the three outings and fired nine shots, five on goal.
Against Sacred Heart on Sept. 4, Arcila swung in the corner kick that eventually led to Mario Prata's game-winning goal early in the first half. He followed that up with one of the best performances from any player in the nation on Sept. 7 at Princeton, going off for six points via two goals and two assists.
Arcila had a hand in every score for the Pirates as they rallied from a 3-0 deficit for a 4-3 double overtime winner. After scoring to cut the deficit to 3-2 in the 67th minute, he swung in a free kick that led to the equalizer in the 90th minute. In double overtime, he connected on a direct free kick in the 105th minute. At Penn on Sept. 10, he again converted a direct free kick with a quick reset in the 59th minute to give The Hall a 2-1 lead that stood up as the eventual game-winner.
Overall this season the Colombian midfielder leads the BIG EAST in points (11), ranks second in goals (4) and slots in tied for third in assists (3). Arcila's two game-winning are tied for first in the league, while his 2.3 shots per game are tied for eighth.
Munford's award comes after the freshman netminder went 3-0-0 with 10 saves during the big week. He recorded a 1.27 GAA and a .714 save percentage over the three matches, playing all 283:55 between the pipes. His best performance came against Sacred Heart, notching a four-save shutout. He also made a key save late in the second half at Penn to preserve the 2-1 lead.
The Pirates return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 13 to host Delaware in a non-league matchup. The contest will serve as The Hall's final match prior to BIG EAST play kicking off on Sept. 16 vs. St. John's.
