SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall men's soccer team (5-4-2) closed its regular season non-conference slate with a tidy 1-0 win over in-state foe NJIT (6-8-0) on a chilly Tuesday night at Owen T. Carroll Field. Francisco Alderete (Salta, Argentina) notched a second-half goal for the Pirates to back a five-save clean sheet from Andreas Nota (Rome, Italy) in the victory.
Both sides played a cautious first half with limited opportunities, and the match went to the half with no score despite a 6-4 edge in shots for The Hall. The Pirates began to push the tempo in the second half and were rewarded for their efforts in the 53rd minute.
Turning Point
The Pirates would break the scoreless tie less than 10 minutes into the second half with the match's lone goal. JP Marin (Briarwood, N.Y.) started the scoring play from the right wing with a long low cross to fellow freshman CJ Tibbling (Järna, Sweden) on the left side of the box. Tibbling worked his way deep for a right footed blast that was turned aside by NJIT keeper Tristan Parker, but Alderete pounced on the rebound and roofed one into the back of the net to make it 1-0.
That goal would be the difference, as the Pirates controlled possession through much of the second half. NJIT made a late charge in the final minutes of regulation, forcing Nota to save a header off a free kick in the 87th minute to preserve the shutout.
