The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage graduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports. Athletics and academic achievements, campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership are evaluated. Â An equitable approach is employed in reviewing an applicant's nomination form to provide all student-athlete nominees an opportunity to receive the graduate award, regardless of sport, division, gender or race. Â In maintaining the highest broad-based standards in the selection process, the program aims to reward those individuals whose dedication and effort are reflective of those characteristics necessary to succeed and thrive through graduate study.
Walkden finished her four-year run in South Orange as one of the best to ever don the Blue and White, thriving both on and off the field. In 202 career contests she batted .351 and clubbed 51 home runs, totaling 206 hits, 147 runs scored and 153 RBIs. She either holds or ranks top-three in program history in every major offensive category. Off the field Walkden was also a star, earning four BIG EAST All-Academic Team nods and a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection. She was the 2018 BIG EAST Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year and graduated in May with a degree in mathematics and secondary education.Â
