SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Senior Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) erupted for 19 kills, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell to No. 11 Marquette, 3-0 (12-25, 40-42, 12-25), despite a historic second set effort on Saturday.
Â
In the second set, Seton Hall fell, 42-40, setting a new Pirate record for points in a single set. Marquette's 42 points were just four away from the NCAA single-set record. The Pirates went toe-to-toe with the nation's No. 11 ranked team, staving off 12 Marquette set points before ultimately succumbing on the 13th.
Â
Gasser finished with 19 kills, a .295 attack percentage and nine digs to lead the Pirate offense.
Â
Senior Maggie Cvelbar (Euclid, Ohio) also finished just one dig shy of a double-double, recording a match-high 29 assists to go with nine digs and two blocks.
Â
SET 1:
The first set was all Marquette as it used a .483 attack percentage to fuel a 25-12 victory. Seton Hall never led in the set, although it kept the score close early. A kill by Reece Koehler (Stillwater, Minn.) cut the Golden Eagles' lead to 12-9, but Marquette responded with an 11-1 run to take a commanding 23-10 lead. They went on to win, 25-12.
Â
SET 2:
The epic second set featured eight lead changes and 22 ties. Gasser had nine kills, and Marquette's Allie Barber had 11 kills, in set two alone. Seton Hall got ahead early and forced a Marquette timeout up, 10-6. The Golden Eagles responded with six straight points to take control, 12-10. Trailing 21-18, The Hall scored four of the next five points to tie the set at 22. Trailing 24-23, a kill by Amanda Rachwal (Bethlehem, Pa.) staved off the first Marquette set point. That began a string of four straight set points by Marquette thwarted by the Pirates. Down 27-26, The Hall scored two straight to assume set point itself, but it was fought off by Marquette to tie the score at 28. The Pirates had set points of 28-27, 29-28, 31-30 and 38-37, but each time the Golden Eagles were able to find the equalizer. The never-say-die Pirates saved a total of 12 set points for Marquette before falling, 42-40.
Â
SET 3:
Gasser had seven of the Pirates' eight kills in the third set, but The Hall fell victim to a late run by Marquette. A kill by Gasser cut the Golden Eagles' lead to 12-7, but Marquette responded with a 10-3 run to put the set out of reach. Marquette went on to close out the match with a 25-12 set three win.
