LAST WEEKEND
Last weekend, the Pirates dropped a pair of contests against local BIG EAST rival St. John's. On Friday, senior Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and freshman Julia Wilkins (Mason, Ohio) combined to record 16 kills and only three attack errors, but the Pirates fell in straight sets at St. John's, 3-0 (18-25, 14-25, 17-25).
Â
Gasser had a team-high nine kills, only three attack errors, four digs and three blocks in a solid all-around contest. Wilkins finished with seven kills, no attack errors and a team-best .438 attack percentage.
Â
On Sunday, Gasser recorded a team-highs of 12 kills and seven digs, but The Hall fell to St. John's, 3-0 (16-25, 18-25, 20-25) in Walsh Gym. Gasser, Maggie Cvelbar (Euclid, Ohio) and Madison Salkowski (Cold Spring, Ky.) were honored in a post-match Senior Day ceremony for their four years of service to the program.  Cvelbar finished the match with a team-best 15 assists to go with five digs. Salkowski had two kills.
Â
SCOUTING VILLANOVA
Villanova holds a 29-16 all-time series lead over Seton Hall, which includes a four-set victory over the Pirates earlier this season on Oct. 16 at the Jake Nevin Field House.Â
Â
Junior Amanda Rachwal (Bethlehem, Pa.) had a team-high 12 kills and Gasser notched a double-double, but the Pirates fell at Villanova, 3-1 (19-25, 25-20, 16-25, 13-25). Rachwal had 12 kills, three digs and two blocks, while Gasser tallied her second career double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs.
Â
Freshman Reece Koehler (Stillwater, Minn.) had nine kills and no attack errors in a strong offensive match. Cvelbar finished with a team-high 31 assists to go with seven digs and three kills.
Â
Villanova enters the weekend with a 20-8 overall record and an 11-5 mark in BIG EAST Conference play, which is good for a third-place tie in the standings. The Wildcats however, are coming off a pair of losses last weekend on the road. They fell in five sets on Friday at DePaul before dropping a four-setter at No. 9 Marquette on Saturday.
Â
SCOUTING GEORGETOWN
Georgetown leads the all-time series against Seton Hall, 23-19, but the Pirates swept the Hoyas earlier this year in Walsh Gym. No Pirate had more than nine kills, but four had at least six as a balanced offensive attack fueled the Pirates to a three-set sweep of Georgetown, 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-19), on Oct. 9.
Â
Gasser had a match-high nine kills to go with four blocks and two digs. Rachwal, Koehler and Emilee Turner (Kaysville, Utah) combined for 21 kills and only three attack errors (one apiece). Cvelbar finished just one dig shy of another double-double, finishing with a match-high 26 assists to go with nine digs.
Â
The Hoyas enter the weekend with a 13-17 overall record and a 3-13 mark in BIG EAST play. The contest is significant for The Hall because a victory would finish them in eight place in the final standings, ahead of Georgetown, as opposed to ninth.Â
Â
Georgetown has lost eight of their last nine matches, with only a three-set sweep of Providence on Nov. 8 keeping them from an eight-match losing streak. The Hoyas are 9-10 at McDonough Arena this season.
