Pirates Rally Past Providence, 77-71
1/3/2021 3:51:00 PM | Women's Basketball
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Behind 20 points from both sophomores Mya Jackson (Wilmington, Ohio) and Lauren Park-Lane (Wilmington, Del.) the Seton Hall women's basketball team rallied from a 12-point deficit to earn its first BIG EAST victory of the season, 77-71, at Providence on Sunday.
Â
The Pirates trailed by as many as nine points in the third quarter until a dramatic 14-0 run gave them the lead for good and changed their fates.
Â
Jackson scored 20 points on an efficient 7-for-11 shooting from the floor, including 5-for-6 from three-point range. Park-Lane had 20 points and was 8-for-11 from the free-throw line. She also dished out five assists.
Â
Senior Desiree Elmore (Hartford, Conn.) had a strong all-around game despite dealing with foul trouble. The forward finished with 14 points to go with a game-high 11 rebounds and five assists.
Â
The Story:
The Hall had its offense clicking early with the help of a pair of three-pointers by Jackson. Mya Bembry (West Orange, N.J.) had a steal, which led to a fast-break bucket by Andra Espinoza-Hunter (Ossining, N.Y.), her first in a Pirate uniform, to put Seton Hall on top, 14-8, mid-way through the first quarter. Providence responded in a big way, however. Spanning 7:32 and crossing into the second quarter, the Friars went on a 21-4 run to take a commanding 29-18 advantage with 7:59 to go before halftime.
Â
A jumper by Elmore with 5:56 left in the second quarter was the first field goal the Pirates had hit in nearly a quarter, but it also jump-started The Hall's offense. An 8-2 Seton Hall burst cut its deficit to just four points, 33-29, with 3:40 to go before the break. The Friars though, again answered with eight unanswered points, and ultimately took a 41-32 lead into the locker room.
Â
Providence shot 62.1% from the floor in the opening half and held a nine-point advantage despite committing 11 turnovers.
Â
Inside the Numbers:
Seton Hall will return to action on Wednesday, January 6 when it hosts BIG EAST rival Villanova at Walsh Gymnasium. The game will be streamed by the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports, and of course will be provided on the radio by 89.5 FM WSOU and wsou.net. Tip-time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET.
