2/18/2021 3:52:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Sophomore Lauren Park-Lane (Wilmington, Del.) scored a career-high 32 points and Andra Espinoza-Hunter (Ossining, N.Y.) added 26, including a game-tying three-pointer at the end of regulation, to lift the Seton Hall women's basketball team to a 79-72 overtime victory over Georgetown on Thursday.
Â
Espinoza-Hunter drained a game-tying three-pointer with only seven seconds left in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime. That's when Park-Lane took over, scoring 13 of her 32 points in the extra session.
Â
The victory snaps a three-game losing streak and is the Pirates' first overtime victory since 2016.
Â
Park-Lane scored 32 points on 9-for-17 shooting from the field and was 11-for-12 from the free-throw line. She also had four assists and two rebounds. Espinoza-Hunter had 26 points on the strength of five made three-pointers and had five rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Â
The Story:
Trailing 33-23, Georgetown scored seven straight to cut their deficit to 33-30 with 7:26 left to play in the third quarter. Seton Hall boosted their lead back up to eight, 38-30, but the Hoyas went on a 10-2 run to tie the game at 40 with 3:50 left in the third. Two minutes later, the Hoyas grabbed their first lead of the game, 44-43, on a Graceann Bennett layup.
Â
The contest would remain a one-possession game throughout the remainder of the third and all the fourth quarter. After four lead changes, Georgetown took the lead with under two minutes remaining, and a pair of made free-throws by Kelsey Ransom gave the Hoyas a 62-59 lead with only 29 seconds left. Park-Lane connected on a pair of free-throws with 13 seconds left, but Bennett boosted the Hoyas lead back to three with a pair from the charity stripe with only 12 seconds remaining. That's when Park-Lane found Espinoza-Hunter on the wing for the game-tying three-pointer.
Â
In the extra session, a layup by Georgetown's Jillian Archer put the Hoyas in front 68-67, but the Pirates bounced back with an 8-0 run, reclaiming the lead on a Park-Lane three-point play, and icing the game at the free-throw line. Park-Lane scored 13 of the Pirates 15 points in the overtime period and was 8-for-9 from the free-throw line.
Â
Seton Hall will return to action on Saturday, February 20 when it hosts long-time BIG EAST rival Providence. The game will be streamed by the BIG EAST Digital Network and shown on FloHoops.com, and of course will be provided on the radio by 89.5 FM WSOU and wsou.net. Tip-time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET.
