NEW YORK – Following an offensive explosion from the Seton Hall softball team last weekend, graduate Janae Barracato (Hempstead, N.Y.) was named the BIG EAST's Player of the Week while freshman Lauren Caye (Pittsburgh, Pa. ) earned Freshman of the Week Honors. Barracato hit .615 (8-13) with three doubles and six runs score while Caye went 3-5 (.600) with three home runs in three Pirate wins at the Retriever Round Robin hosted by UMBC.
In two wins on Sunday, Barracato would go 5-6 with two doubles and four runs scored as the Pirates tallied 30 runs between the two matchups. In addition to her eight hits, Barracato also walked twice bringing her on-base percentage to a .667 clip at the top of the Pirates' lineup. The graduate led the conference this past weekend in on base percentage (.667), base hits (8) and doubles (3), while racking up three multi-hit performances.
After being called on to pinch hit in the fifth inning of the Pirates' win over UMBC on Sunday, Caye proceeded to hit two home runs in the same inning for The Hall. In just her second career plate appearance, Caye went deep with a solo shot before coming around to knock a three-run home run over the wall later in the inning. In game two against Saint Joseph's Caye would again call upon the three-run homer with her third home run of the afternoon. Caye racked up seven RBIs in two Pirate wins.
On Sunday, the Pirates accounted for 30 runs, 28 hits and nine home runs as the finished up the weekend at 3-1 to improve to 4-4 on the season. The 19 runs in the win over UMBC in game one set the program record for most runs in a game while the 17-run differential was the largest margin of victory in program history. The 19 hits tied a program record.
The Pirates will have some time off before heading west to take part in the Libby Matson Tournament hosted by Pacific from March 4-6. Seton Hall will play five games over the course of three days against the likes of Pacific, Nevada and Idaho State.
