NEW YORK - Junior Arina Gumerova and freshman Arabella Moen helped lead the Seton Hall women's tennis team to a 2-0 weekend, and as a result of their stellar play, they earned recognition from the BIG EAST Conference. Gumerova was named BIG EAST Female Singles Player of the Week, and she teamed with Moen to earn BIG EAST Female Doubles Players of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday.
It is Seton Hall's first BIG EAST Player of the Week honor since March 2019.
Gumerova went 2-0 at No. 1 singles over the weekend, beating Binghamton's Lara Kaplan at home in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, and then beating Monmouth's Nicole Gasser on the road in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. She helped the Pirates sweep the weekend's matches over Binghamton, 7-0, and Monmouth, 6-1. Gumerova, who has played every single match this season at No. 1, is now unbeaten in her last four singles appearances, sits at 13-6 on the year and 4-2 in the spring.
Gumerova and Moen teamed up to go 2-0 at No. 1 doubles over the weekend, losing just one game over the two days combined and helping the Pirates secure team wins over Binghamton, 7-0, and Monmouth, 6-1. First, they defeated Binghamton's pairing of Caterina Casadei and Maria Pereira, 6-0, and then topped Monmouth's pairing of Nicole Gasser and Lenien Jamir, 6-1. Since becoming a doubles pairing on Jan. 30, Gumerova and Moen have now won five of their six appearances together.
Seton Hall, which is off to a 5-2 start to the spring, heads to New England this weekend for three matches, beginning with Friday at Providence at 1 p.m.
