Clinton, S.C. – The Seton Hall softball team heads south for the Pinnacle PC Invitational this weekend, hosted by Presbyterian College. The Pirates will face off twice against Appalachian State and IUPUI, while playing a single game against the host school.
LAST TIME OUT
The Pirates suffered a pair of narrow defeats on opening day, losing 1-0 to Samford before falling 2-1 to Southern Miss. The Hall were scheduled to face the same two teams last Saturday, but those games were washed out due to rain. Pitching ruled the day for Seton Hall, beginning with Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) hurling seven innings of one-run ball and striking out eight in the season opener. In game two, Kelsey Carr (Ridgewood, N.Y.) made her first pitching appearance since May 2021 and struck out a career-high 10 batters over eight shutout innings.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Appalachian State (1-1; 29-26, 10-15 Sun Belt in 2022)
The Mountaineers opened their season last weekend with a doubleheader at Queens, dropping game one before taking game two. Appalachian State and Seton Hall have met six times previously, with the Pirates holding a 4-2 advantage. The last time the two sides met was in 2018.
IUPUI (1-2; 12-38, 9-17 Horizon in 2022)
The Jaguars and Pirates will square off for the first time ever, first on Friday at 2 p.m. and again on Sunday at 10 a.m. IUPUI was picked seventh in the Horizon League preseason poll, and return several key contributors including last year's leading hitter Kendal Calvert. The Jaguars went 1-2 last weekend, losing to North Florida and Jacksonville after beating Syracuse in the opener.
Presbyterian (4-0; 36-15, 19-8 Big South)
The hosts of this weekend's invitational are off to a hot start in 2023, sweeping opening weekend at home with three of the wins being shutouts. The Blue Hose were picked to finish second in the Big South preseason rankings after a 36-win season in 2022, the program's highest win total in its Division I era. Jenna Greene was named the conference's Preseason Pitcher of the Year, and she showed why last weekend by tossing a no-hitter in Saturday's win over Bellarmine. Presbyterian and Seton Hall will face off just once this weekend in what will be the first ever meeting between the two sides.
