NEW YORK – A trio of Pirates landed BIG EAST weekly honors, the conference announced on Monday. Kelsey Carr (Ridgewood, N.Y.) was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week, Erin Howard (Skillman, N.J.) was named the league's Freshman of the Week, and Olivia Gilbert (Johnston, R.I.) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Carr is named Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season, as she also received the honor back on March 13. She also lands a BIG EAST weekly honor for the fourth consecutive week. Carr pitched 10 scoreless innings over the weekend as part of the Pirates' sweep over St. John's, allowing just three base hits and striking out nine. The junior got the start in Friday's series opener, tossing a complete game three-hit shutout with five strikeouts in the 5-0 victory over the Red Storm. On Sunday, Carr came on in relief for the final three innings to try and seal the sweep. She allowed just one baserunner and no hits in her outing, striking out four and earning her first career save. Carr's season ERA now sits at 1.48 and she has allowed no more than two runs in each of her last eight appearances.
Howard earns a BIG EAST weekly honor for the first time, becoming the first Pirate this season to win Freshman of the Week. The Skillman, N.J. native was an RBI machine last week, knocking in six runs over her nine at bats with two of those RBI proving to be the eventual game-winner. Howard batted a team-best .556 (5-for-9) for the week, highlighted by a pair of two-hit performances. Howard started the week going 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored in the 10-1 win over Monmouth on Tuesday. She got the start as the designated player in game two of the St. John's series, again going 2-for-3 at the plate while knocking home a run. In Sunday's win over the Red Storm, her first inning single to left field brought home a pair of runs and capped a four-run opening frame for the Pirates.
Gilbert earns a BIG EAST honor for the first time this season thanks so her timely offensive production. The sophomore batted .471 (8-for-17) last week with a home run, four RBI, four runs scored and a pair of doubles. Both of those two-baggers brough home a run in Friday's win over St. John's, while her home run on Tuesday at Monmouth helped cushion a 3-0 victory. All told, Gilbert had four two-hit games last week, and her 26 RBI this season leads the team and is nearly triple her total from last season.
The Pirates play a pair of non-conference opponents this week, starting with a home doubleheader on Wednesday against Rider. Following that, The Hall head to take on Lehigh for a three-game series starting on Friday.
