Bethlehem, Pa. – Behind home runs from Kelsey Carr (Ridgewood, N.Y.) and Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.) and another strong pitching performance from Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas), the Pirates took the rubber match in the three-game weekend series at Lehigh, 8-0, in six innings on Saturday.

How it Happened

The Pirates' bats were hot early, scoring two runs in the second to take the early advantage. The first strike came from Carr, who launched a solo home run to right field to make it a 1-0 game. Later in the inning, Jenna Blevins (Flat Rock, Mich.) kept her strong weekend going with an RBI single.
The Pirates dealt a big blow in the third to break the game open. With two runners on, Wingo launched a three-run home run just over the wall in center to bring the lead up to 5-0.
The Hall went back to work in the fourth to score two more. After the first two batters of the inning were set down, Hannah Alexander (Wrightstown, N.J.) and Ashly Colonnetta (Cypress, Texas) hit back-to-back singles. Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.) came to the plate and ripped a two-run double to right field to bring both runners home and make it a 7-0 game.
In the sixth, Andrea Perez (Corona, Calif.) attempted to advance to third on a base hit to left field by Alexander. The throw from the outfield went wide, allowing Perez to come home to score the eighth Pirate run.
While her offense was doing work at the plate, Smith was doing the same in the circle. The senior fired her second complete game shutout of the season. Smith walked one and struck out five over six innings.

Notes & Numbers

The Pirates are now 12 games over .500 and improve to 16-3 over their last 19 games.
For the third time over the last five games, each of the top five batters in the Pirates' batting order recorded at least one hit.
Carr's home run was her seventh of the year, breaking the tie with Olivia Gilbert (Johnston, R.I.) for the team lead.
Wingo has reached base in 20 consecutive games and now has recorded a hit in 19 of her last 20 games. She has only failed to record a base hit in six of her 36 games this season.
Blevins got her second consecutive start at third base, knocking in a run in both of those outings.

The Pirates continue their road swing on Tuesday as they head to Philadelphia for a doubleheader against Drexel on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
