Austin, Texas – The Seton Hall softball team saw its historic season come to an end on Saturday night, falling to Texas State by a final score of 4-3. The Pirates conclude the 2023 season with an overall record of 42-18 after making their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2005.
How it Happened
The Pirates got runners aboard early and often, putting runners in scoring position in each of the first two innings. However, Seton Hall was unable to score and found itself in a scoreless duel entering the third inning.
After a leadoff single by Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.) to open the inning, Kelsey Carr (Ridgewood, N.Y.) smacked a long two-run home run over the wall in centerfield to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead. The home run was Carr's team-leading 13th of the year and helped her reach 50 RBI on the season.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Bobcats had back-to-back singles to mount their first threat of the game. Carr dug deep in the circle, getting the final three outs of the inning, including the final out with runners on second and third, to escape the inning.
A big fifth inning gave Texas State the lead, and the Bobcats tacked another run on in the sixth to lead by two.
In the seventh, the Pirates put the pressure on by putting the first two batters of the frame on base. With the bases loaded and one out, Andrea Perez (Corona, Calif.) grounded into a fielder's choice to bring home a run and put the tying run at third. Ashly Colonnetta (Cypress, Texas) came to the plate with a chance to tie the game, but lined out to second base to end the game.
